Grading Policy

 Aim

The aim of this policy is to ensure grading teams is fair, effective and is in the best interests of each player and the Club.

As Netball is a graded sport, the aim of grading is to form teams in Engadine Eagles Netball Club (EENC) which have a balanced group of players of similar ability across all playing positions. EENC select teams to ensure the best chance of success, the greatest level of enjoyment and the highest potential for individual player development during each season to compete in the Sutherland Shire Netball Association (SSNA). The process will also be influenced by the number of registered players in any particular season or age group.

Grading Sub-Committee and Responsibilities

The Grading Sub-Committee will aim to be –

  • A fair opportunity for all players to be assessed.
  • Open and transparent.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Run effective grading sessions.
  • Attend regular EENC Meetings and Grading Sub-Committee Meetings.
  • To create a balanced team of players of similar ability across all playing positions.
  • To create teams which will be competitive in their assigned grades.
  • To ensure teams, where possible, are placed in a grade appropriate to their ability.
  • Assess players overall skills against the Grading Criteria.

Situations commonly arise whereby a young person’s school age cohort does not correspond with the netball age group. The Grading Sub-Committee will in situations where players wish to play up an age group attempt to accommodate requests. However, the Grading Sub-Committee reserves the right to consider such requests on an annual and individual basis and will be required to put the interests of selecting all teams in all age groups ahead of individual requests. For this reason, individuals may be required to be graded into their netball age group in any given season.

A grader will not be permitted to grade their own child/children’s age group.

Grading Selection Criteria

Players will be assessed against the following criteria –

  • Number of registered players in each age group.
  • The positional balance of teams to be graded into an age group.
  • Coaches Report – A coach of a team will be required to complete a written evaluation of each player’s skills, attendance at training, games, team work and attitude. The Coaching Co-Ordinator will endeavor to have 2 written detailed evaluation reports completed each season. The first at the end of Round 1 and the second at the end of the season.
  • Physical Potential – Height, speed, power, agility, balance, co-ordination, acceleration, change of direction, jumping and leaping.
  • Basic Skills – Movement, footwork, catching, throwing, attacking, defending, shooting (if relevant) and netball decision making.
  • Character & Attitude – Obtained from Coaches Reports and any observations on the practical grading days.

A player position will not be held in any team for any late registration.

A late registration will only be accepted if teams require additional players, once been discussed with all Club graders.

  1. All players must attend all EENC practical grading.
  2. Players that cannot attend Club grading must notify the Secretary, Grading Co-Ordinator and Registrars. They are not entitled to query team placement.
  3. All new players registered with EENC from 10yrs to 16yrs must attend Club grading. A non-attendance player will be paper graded based on any available records and placed into a team accordingly.
  4. All 10yrs players and any other age group that SSNA specifies must attend SSNA practical grading.

17yrs Age Group

The following paragraphs are to be read concurrently in regards to the grading of the  17yrs age group players and teams.

  • Team requests for the 17yrs age group will be considered. EENC recognizes that the 17’s established team groups can exist as well as friendships formed through netball. EENC however reserves the right to play any individually registered 17yrs age group players into any team regardless of whether the Registrar has initially been accepted;
  • Requests for 15 age group players to play in the 17yrs age group will be considered by the Grading Sub-Committee. However, the Grading Sub-Committee reserves the right to insist on a case by case basis that any 15age group player must play in the 15 age group, this will be determined by the number of player registrations.
  • The Grading Sub-Committee reserves the right to paper or practically grade 17yrs age group teams on a year to year basis as is deemed necessary.

EENC Grading Sub-Committee will consider requests for 17yrs age group players to be registered in a Senior Team. However, the Grading Sub-Committee reserves the right on a case by case basis to insist that any 17yrs age group player must play in the 17yrs age group.

Senior Teams

Senior Teams are predominantly block registrations and grading is completed via paper grading, considering player history and the make-up of the team. EENC reserves the right to place an individual senior player into a team once discussions have been had with the Team contact and Senior Registrar.

Team Selection and Announcements

  • At completion of grading, the Grading Co-Ordinator and Grading Sub-Committee will review all grading information (paper and practical) and place players into teams.
  • The notification of teams will be announced by uploading on EENC’s Website.
  • Teams are final once grading is complete and have been announced.
  • Players will not be eligible for a refund. Refunds of registrations will only take place in extenuating circumstances. Refunds refer to Section 10(i) of the EENC By-Laws.
  • Player and parent expectations may differ with the graders decisions. EENC will not enter into debate about a player’s ability or individual grading, nor will EENC participate in a discussion comparing players.

We hope that players and parents understand the complexities of grading and the difficulties that the Graders have in achieving teams that have a balanced group of players in different playing positions.

The Grading Policy will be reviewed each year
